I realized one day how much chicken I’ve eaten and how many eggs I eat and I was grateful for all the chicken.  The more I thought about it the more I realized how important chickens are for humanity and how much they have supported us. They not only give us food, they are amazing helpers on the farm and in the garden. I wanted to honour the chicken for All it has done. In this painting I used the idea of SaintHood and sainted the chicken with a golden halo. The halo reminds me of a devilled egg serving tray. The chicken is wearing a black cloak and wearing a golden alpha, and omega symbol necklace, representing the conundrum of which came first the chicken or the egg? Alpha and omega, the beginning and the end. At the top of the image is a golden egg not unlike the golden egg in Aesop’s fables with moral lessons about greed.

Within the comb of the chicken is the gesture of peace, and in the wattle of the chicken a symbol of Love.

The Golden egg also has connections to the Greek creation myth of Eros.

“In the beginning there was an empty darkness. The only thing in this void was Nyx, a bird with black wings. With the wind she laid a golden egg and for ages she sat upon this egg. Finally life began to stir in the egg and out of it rose Eros, the god of love. One half of the shell rose into the air and became the sky and the other became the Earth. Eros named the sky Uranus and the Earth he named Gaia. Then Eros made them fall in love.”
